FIESTA
Familias Inmigrantes Empoderándose contra eStrés Tomando Acción
FIESTA (Familias Inmigrantes Empoderándose contra eStrés Tomando Acción) is a community-led and community-made curriculum that aims to empower Latino immigrant families facing immigrant-related stressors.
Our collaboration began in 2021 between academic partners at the University of Illinois Chicago and The Resurrection Project in Chicago. We shared a common vision to empower Latino immigrant families impacted by the stress of being an immigrant - discrimination, language difficulties, fear of deportation, conflicts with their children over cultural values, and overall, adjusting to the complexities of the United States. Over 70 project meetings, our team developed FIESTA utilizing Intervention Mapping and Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR), ultimately grounding our process in centering lived experience and community expertise.
FIESTA is a 10 session manualized curriculum led by community-health workers or promotoras that engages Latina immigrant mothers and their teens through stress management techniques, communication practices, and structural navigation strategies.
